Dominant Heart of Midlothian Defeat Meek Celtic to Extend Eight Points in Front
At a glance
- Kyziridis & Shankland earn victory for the hosts and propel them eight ahead at the top
- Celtic's McGregor cancelled out the early own goal by Dane Murray
- Hearts extend 13 games without defeat for the first occasion in over two decades
The dominant Edinburgh side surged eight points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership to bolster their early-season title credentials and worsen the malaise around the Celtic team.
Alexandros Kyziridis' fine strike and a spot-kick from Shankland gave Derek McInnes' side a two-goal advantage that the title holders could not recover from.
The young defender - one of three youngsters in the Celtic XI - scored an own goal in the early stages to put Hearts ahead at a bouncing their home ground, and it was the 22-year-old's foul that led to the penalty.
A stylish finish from McGregor of the season had quickly cancelled out the first goal, and Benjamin Nygren almost put Rodgers' team in front, opting for finesse over power and allowing Alexander Schwolow to make a crucial stop.
But Derek McInnes' irrepressible Hearts seized control again to consign the visitors to successive league defeats for the initial occasion since 2023.
It also gives the Edinburgh side a significant lead at the top of the table.
The previous occasion they were so far clear was in 2005-06 under George Burley, when they ultimately finished second - a rare instance that a team has failed to win the title after building such an advantage in the last three decades.
The Hearts coach, whose former team were second to Celtic on multiple times, has been at pains to downplay title talk, as the club seek their maiden league title since 1960.
The Celtic boss has experienced this previously at the club - both flawless and stuttering starts to a season. He's never ended as runner-up.
But on Sunday's evidence, this Hearts team showed they deserve serious consideration.
Analysis: The hosts Capitalize of Depleted Celtic
The Edinburgh side started with the self-assurance of a side undefeated in the league this season - the popular attacker delivered a ball for the striker to fire off target.
The Glasgow team didn't aid their cause with some unusual sloppiness in possession and they buckled under their first real examination.
Claudio Braga's header was touched on to a post by the Celtic keeper and the follow-up from Shankland was diverted goalwards by the hapless defender, in for the absent center-back.
Celtic grew into the contest and started building moves. From a flowing attack, Sebastian Tounekti released the full-back to square for the captain, who rolled in.
Aside from the opportunity for Nygren, the visitors found it hard to generate chances for striker Kenny or his substitute Yamada amid the absence of injured forwards their key strikers.
The home team regained their intensity and versatility in attacking from across the final third. Kyziridis, one of the finds of the club's scouting network, fired a low shot past Schmeichel from the just outside the area.
Almost straight away, the defender tripped the midfielder in the right side of the box and Shankland converted. And it could've been an even more handsome win, had replacement Ageu not been stopped by Schmeichel.
The visitors' performance after the break was somewhat summed up in a couple of moments involving record signing Arne Engles.
The set-piece from Engles delivery was in stark contrast to his midweek exploits in the continental victory over their Austrian opponents and the national team player was then booked for a cynical foul.
What They Said
The Hearts manager: "You see how hard the players work, the team spirit. That's not sufficient on its own to win games consistently.
"What we have got, is good technical ability. You're witnessing it from multiple individuals who have been here before. Some of the new signings are eager to show that.
"We've got a good thing going at the minute, but it's only three points. It's crucial for us to keep winning. We've got much work ahead, loads to do. Following the initial fixtures is typically a benchmark of where you are."
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "The second goal was disappointing from our perspective. We didn't move when the play was recycled as a line so when they play it, they should have players offside but didn't. We have got to do better with the shot.
"Plenty of matches to play for. It's still so early. It's only nine games in. Obviously, being eight adrift is not what we would want. The comfort is there's numerous fixtures to play.
"We now have to focus on the present and look to find more consistency and better performance in our play."
