Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.
An new term came to light a few months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a young patient who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, just as it refutes all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what global togetherness manifests as.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Contest Continues Amidst Profound Human Cost
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that was originally built on harmony has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
