Government Official Confirms MoD Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Staff Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to refrain from talking about secret information in all cars.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

The wider defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in all areas of government operations, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
