Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
