Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at school
Schools in the northern part of Nigeria have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The armed faction stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.

The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their hostel, an official report indicated.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who frequently execute kidnappings to seek ransom payments or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their daughters' safe return.

Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in the last several months, with educational institutions suffering the most of the conflict.
