The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
