Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Documenting His 20 Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir in the coming weeks named A Prisoner’s Diary, detailing his time served behind bars.

The announcement was made shortly after the former president gained freedom as he contests the guilty verdict for illegal collaboration in a case to acquire political financing provided by the government of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he writes in an extract, implying the book is more about his thoughts during solitary confinement instead of extensive analysis regarding the packed and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears endless commotion,” he continues. “The noise unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is fortified while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated via screen from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this nightmare bearable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It has an impact every inmate because it’s gruelling.”

Unprecedented Situation

The former president, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as past president of an EU country and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to experience jail.

Before entering jail he declared he would use his time for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

Unconfirmed is whether he had time to review and analyze the three books he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated later flees to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

The former leader was held secluded for his own security in a room roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in Paris. Guards stayed in the next cell.

It was stated his diet consisted only yoghurts during his stay due to concerns any food might have been spat on. Although he had access to cook for himself yet he declined, as per accounts. Unclear remains if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, told the release hearing security would be better out of prison compared to inside. “He has faced menacing messages, heard shouts after dark and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody last month after a Paris court sentenced him to five years in prison for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to obtain election financing for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case planned for early next year.
