No fewer than thirteen individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
