NY Launches Portal for Residents to Share ICE Videos Following Arrests of Four American Citizens
New York state attorney general has launched a fresh digital platform urging residents to provide visual evidence of ICE operations around the state. This step comes just a day after a significant immigration operation rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking large-scale protests.
US Citizens Held During ICE Operation
A congressional representative disclosed during a news conference that four US citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Protests occurred in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"All New York residents deserves to live without fear," the AG stated in a release.
"Anyone who observed and recorded immigration enforcement yesterday, I encourage you to submit that evidence with the authorities. We are committed to examining these submissions and investigating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The form provides options to submit visual evidence of the raid, plus a area to note where it occurred. Before submitting, users must mark a box that confirms that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Information about the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say featured over fifty ICE personnel, occurred in a popular district of NYC where fake purses, items, goods and additional items are commonly traded in large quantities – typically to sightseers.
Footage of the incident show multiple covered and weaponized officers zip-tying and detaining a individual, and pushing back onlookers. Throngs of New Yorkers followed the officers through the streets. An armored military vehicle was also seen moving along the urban roads.
Official Reactions
During a midweek briefing held with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four American citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be detained for no reason." He clarified the persons were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman stated. "This constitutes a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is simply a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the troops to prevent unrest that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the immigration operation rapidly grew – all three political contenders denounced the operation, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, not safety. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate declared.
The city's advocacy organizations spoke out too.
"Immigration agents descended on Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, covered personnel and riot gear to go after street vendors trying to make a living. This action had no connection to community security and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," said the head of a major immigrant coalition.
Agency Rules
ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has claimed it refrains from take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has revealed that over 170 citizens have been held against their will by ICE during the period of the current administration.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in NY and nationwide this year.
An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing ICE are commonplace as are allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a document filed by civil rights groups alleged inadequate care of pregnant women in detention centers.
