Preparations for Putin-Trump Summit Shelved Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

Recently the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to examine the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a meeting was not "required".

The administration declined to provide further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting Trump had pushed him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Russia.

However, on Monday the American president embraced a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he said.

Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, suggesting that pausing conflict would simply constitute a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently preceded speculation that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he commented.
