The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in decades are being hailed as a "major milestone" in the battle against drug-resistant strains of the pathogen, according to health experts.

A Global Public Health Issue

Cases of gonorrhoea are on the rise worldwide, with estimates suggesting over 82 million instances each year. Particularly high rates are seen in Africa and nations within the World Health Organization's Western Pacific region, which includes China and Mongolia to New Zealand. Within England, cases have hit a historical peak, while figures across Europe in 2023 were significantly elevated compared to the rates from 2014.

Gepotidacin, created by the pharmaceutical company GSK, was also approved in concurrent days. This treatment, which is employed against UTIs, was shown in trials to be effective against superbug versions of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

An Innovative Approach to Creation

Zoliflodacin emerged from a unique collaborative effort for drug creation. The non-profit organisation GARDP partnered with the pharmaceutical company Innoviva to bring it to fruition.

The trial involved nearly 1,000 volunteers from several countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.
