Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough
This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
