In the latest financial plan, we made the right choices for Britain, reducing energy expenses with a £150 reduction in charges, safeguarding the health service and addressing the issue of youth deprivation by removing the two-child limit. We also ensured that the income generated through taxes was done fairly, with everyone contributing but those with the broadest shoulders paying what they owe.

As a result of the choices we made, the budget established a firmer financial footing, driving down inflation and state borrowing costs. This is essential for securing our public services, when £1 in every £10 spent by government goes on loan repayments.

Advancing Financial Initiatives

The budget builds on the action we have already taken to boost financial conditions: allocating £120 billion in additional funding in such things as roads, rail and energy; introducing significant overhaul measures in a generation to back builders, not blockers; promoting the development of Heathrow and Gatwick; and signing trade deals with the EU, India and the US.

In combination, these have allowed us to outperform our expansion estimates.

Revitalizing Our Country

As I set out at the party conference, the government’s purpose is nothing less than the renewal of our economy, our communities and our state. Through this approach, we will end decline and restore faith in our country.

We will confront those on the political extremes who only offer grievance and whose approach would lead to continued weakening. Let me be clear, increasing public debt or bringing back fiscal restraint – that is the politics of decline and I cannot endorse it.

A Comprehensive Growth Mission

During an address next week, I will situate the financial plan within the broader economic renewal on which the government will be assessed following completion of this parliament.

To accomplish the national renewal we seek, we must do more to stimulate expansion, to combat unemployment among young people and to aim for stronger worldwide collaboration with our trading partners.

Regulatory Reform Initiative

Our development strategy will include a refreshed emphasis on eliminating needless bureaucracy. Often it has been those on the left who have preferred controls, but there is nothing forward-thinking in regulations which serve only to increase the cost of living for the poorest, to hinder financial expansion unnecessarily, or stop a progressive administration achieving its aims.

This is the reason I am asking the business secretary to confront the variety of pointless gold-plating and superfluous bureaucracy that add to costs and get in the way of our industrial strategy.

Economic renewal also demands that we must continue to overhaul social security. We inherited a failing system that caused youngsters to lack basic nutrition and which discarded youth as incapable of employment.

We must not accept either part of that unsuccessful conservative approach. Hence the reason we will do more to help young people achieve their potential.

For when people are neglected in your early career, if you are not given the support you need to manage emotional difficulties, or if you are merely dismissed because you are experiencing cognitive variations or handicaps, then it can trap you in a cycle of joblessness and neediness for decades.

This creates economic costs, is harmful to our efficiency, but much more importantly, it eliminates prospects and overlooks capability. Any Labour government worthy of the name must not disregard this.

This is the reason we have appointed an ex-health minister to make practical recommendations to help young people with health conditions access work, training or education – guaranteeing they receive assistance to prosper rather than marginalized.

Global Commerce Improvement

Lastly, we need additional measures to help our businesses engage in worldwide exchange. No believable commercial perspective for Britain that does not place us as a welcoming, business-oriented country.

We need to acknowledge the reality that the botched Brexit deal significantly hurt our economy. You do not need to have a PhD in economics to know that establishing superfluous business impediments with your primary business associate will impede expansion and increase expenses.

So one element of our economic renewal will be maintaining progress in the direction of a enhanced business association with the EU. Should we obtain less expensive nourishment, improve development and produce work opportunities by having a enhanced association with European nations, we should.

A Meaningful Approach for Major Issues

A budget based on fair choices for Britain must be backed up with a determination to achieve the economic renewal that the country needs.
