The esteemed football figure has declared that he is avoiding a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be tough to match the higher calling he encountered as England’s manager.

Southgate suggested his plan to dedicate his efforts toward engaging the next generation and addressing what he called a pervasive negative narrative currently prevalent in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Beyond Football

Speaking on air, Southgate was prompted regarding speculation linking him with available jobs in the top flight and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Role Models

Prior to the launch of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate stated that he is deeply committed about providing role models for teenagers, drawing on lessons from his time as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

He believes that his experience coaching England, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds wider relevance.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Raising Children and Influencing Youth

Reflecting on his role as a parent, Southgate commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He continued: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Division

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often highlights disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His new release, the book Dear England, is scheduled to provide deeper reflections on leadership and country pride drawn from his distinguished time in football.
