Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Alarming Air Quality Readings

Multiple areas of the city registered an air quality index over 500, which equals ten times the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, representing 15-20x above healthy limits.

Fireworks Ban and Current Changes

Since 2020, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that covers the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

However in recent months, the newly elected regional administration appealed to the highest court to propose a modification of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities complied with the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the city registered air quality peaking around midnight to some of the worst levels observed during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Implications

The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also triggered a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high levels of air contamination in the city have continued as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Near the festival period, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Pollution Factors

This crisis in the city is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, farmers routinely set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the city as winter air descends.

Health and Economic Consequences

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous research.

This pollution causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 early fatalities per year in the city.
