Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled formal commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the plan.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations revealed that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have still not produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to close the differences between the two sides.

Critical Points in Discussions

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war governance of the territory

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location appears as home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."

"After we see all home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Near the leader's home in the capital, people gathered to express their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel states forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.

Demonstrator one woman explained: "We must do any agreement needed for the abducted to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of the population desire the war to end in return for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the gathering, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, attacks were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and locality areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk falls, the dread comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, especially my youngest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of six people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area indicated two more fatalities had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south, health workers reported.

The territory's health ministry announced twenty-five of the {territ
