Those $150m Players Transforming a Human Highlight Reel
This year's National Basketball Association campaign starts now, marking the first time in a ten years that Australia's two biggest basketball stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.
Their absence indicates a transition period, as Boomers’ guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as key starters for playoff aspirants, with new huge contracts making them some of the country's top athletic income generators.
But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are set to compete for playing time across the NBA, including experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
Following protracted negotiations with the Bulls, Giddey ultimately inked his rookie extension worth $100m ($153m) over four seasons recently. It's a major deal for the Melburnian, but in NBA terms it is affordable for Giddey’s position and profile as a primary ball-handler. The reluctance for Chicago’s front office to pay top dollar means the young star begins this season with much to prove.
Having been traded by Oklahoma City at the beginning of last season, he observed as his old team charged to the title without him. As the Bulls aim to make the playoffs in the less competitive East, he will need to show his shooting and defence are starter-worthy or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Targets Further Growth
Daniels agreed to the same deal as his counterpart recently, and after his MIP honor last season, the Atlanta guard’s trajectory has taken off in Atlanta following his departure from the Pelicans. He is now praised as one of the league’s best defensive specialists, and led the league in takeaways with 3.0 spg – more than one full steal per game greater than the total of second place.
Performing next to dynamic Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be effective this season as a secondary ballhandler and elite defender as long as the team make the playoffs. But if he can improve his long-range game, which was below league average last year, and keep enhance his passing and driving, he could become one of the league’s most versatile players.
Johnny Furphy A Dunking Sensation
Pacers wing Furphy has burst onto the scene as a fan favourite in Indiana following a series of highlight-reel slam dunks in exhibition games. His athletic displays prompted league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an invite to the All-Star dunk contest could be a possibility.
After logging just eight minutes per contest over 50 games in his debut season, the ex- Maribyrnong College student is in the running for a Pacers rotation that might lean towards young players following injury to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard the Sydney native fell in the June draft down to the 49th pick, where playoff hopefuls Cleveland picked him. The Cavs are front-runners to make the NBA finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be rare for a first-year player taken in the late picks to see significant court time. But the Sydney product has seen time in exhibition play, and his NBA-ready shot gives him a opportunity to contribute.
Playing Time Squeeze Ahead for Experienced Group
Veteran centre Jock Landale has a chance to claim the starting centre spot in Memphis given highly-touted Zach Edey will miss the opening of the season after ankle surgery.
In Portland, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play regular minutes if the team find themselves in the hunt. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is expected to be used as a defensive spark in a reserve role.
In Charlotte, Josh Green’s off-season shoulder procedure has resulted in him without a timeline to come back. The player still has a contract for the upcoming year, but will not want to give his colleagues at the developing Charlotte too much head start. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has missed important exhibition opportunities in Dallas.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Then there are those who are not expected to see a lot of, if any, court time this season. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but appears to be little more than a mentor ensuring Anthony Edwards focused.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be nurtured by Minnesota Timberwolves through their affiliate team. Fellow rookies Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the slow cooker, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be hoping to win playing time with his compatriot for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
If there were any doubts Mills was planning to end his career, he addressed it with a training clip shared on his social media recently, showing the veteran is still in form and determined on securing one more NBA contract.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an break in Australia, angling and using with a Sherrin. Even though he posted on Instagram last month to reject rumors he was retired, the 29-year-old – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has not yet return to the league.
