Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures forecast to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been issued across a large portion of the south-west.

Widespread Extreme Heat Warnings Throughout the Region

These conditions come after recent fires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and loss of life. Severe heat alerts have also been activated for the coming days in parts of South Australia and NSW, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, bringing blazing heat to much of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and relentless heat creates a volatile scenario for firefighters.

In another part of the world, a metropolis was left in blackout last week after powerful winds compromised the city’s power grid, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also caused significant travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous flights were grounded. Severe impact on power systems is expected to create ongoing problems as service providers scramble to restore power to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Blankets Typically Clear Area

Meanwhile, a valley known for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has endured one of its dullest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which usually lasts for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional fall rainfall that resulted in the ground waterlogged.
