Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
